    • No subject?
Can you take a photograph without a subject? That’s the challenge I set the participants in the first session of my latest Through The Lens photo-class. Some of the participants looked at me as though I’ve gone off my head. Is he crazy or what? Others sat in silence. There were those who protested that [...]

Photography is a wonderful way to waste time. You can even spend money doing so. Here are some great time-frittering ideas, not all of them free:   1.  Develop a healthy obsession with dust on your sensor. Buy a special magnifying thingie to fit in place of your lens. Then you can spend hours gazing [...]
    • Keep an eye on the sky
A farmer is never wasting time when he is leaning on a gate looking at his animals. And a photographer is never wasting time gazing at the sky. The sky is the source of the best light for photography. The sky is the backdrop to many of your photographs. The sky is an ever-changing canvas, [...]

What’s this all about?

Alistair Scott

Greetings, thanks for visiting and welcome to this database of writing markets.

I’m Alistair Scott, the author and owner, a freelance writer and photographer living in Switzerland.

I set up this list as I know that finding markets for your writing in Europe can be difficult. There’s a wealth of material for the USA, but far less information available in Europe.

The two handbooks that are available for the region generally only give details of larger UK magazines and journals. Many of the smaller publications are left out, and neither of the handbooks have much about publications on the European mainland.

This database is intended to supplement these. But, it will be more than that. Things change rapidly in the world of publishing and the handbooks are only published once a year. So they can rapidly go out of date. This list is updated day-by-day. If I hear of any changes (and I’m hoping my readers – that’s you – will inform me) I will generally amend the list within 24 hours.

There is also a page for writing competitions. I generally only post details of free ones. Again, if you know of any that are not featured, let me know.

You can get in touch with me by e-mail here or leave a comment on Eurowriter

If you want to find out more about me you can visit my website here, read my photo-blog, or follow me on Twitter where I post as PhotoZone.

I hope that it helps you to find places to get your work published. I’d love to hear of your successes and, if you know of any markets that I’ve missed, do let me know so we can share them.

Good luck with your writing!

  1. Hi Alistair, Good idea you have here and I wish you good luck with it. A publication I’ve worked with that is in the US but Europe-focused is “Absinthe: New European Writing.” They publish two issues a year, sometimes theme or country focused. You might wish to add it to your list: http://www.absinthenew.com

    Cheers, Patti

Brilliant idea – thank you so much! I’ll be tweeting about this!

    • Thank you Barbara, and thanks for tweeting it. The more who know the merrier, and maybe people can give feedback on market experiences … the good … and the not so good. Every little helps in the life of a freelancer.
